Three Great Ways to Cool Your Garden With More Shade

Posted on: 6 November 2018

An increased amount of shade is highly desirable in the average Australian garden. This is because Australia gets more direct sunlight than just about any other country in the Western world. Given the very strong Australian sun, you should make sure that any shade you create is used as effectively as possible. This way, you will be able to enjoy your garden more in the summer months. What are the best options for generating greater levels of shade in your home's garden?

1. Shade Sails

You often see them used in school playgrounds as well as public parks, but shade sails are becoming ever more popular in domestic places in the country. This is because shade sails offer a very effective way of cooling a specific area in your garden. They are, for instance, often used to block sunshine from a patio or a terrace with a seating area. You can also use them to create some shade for you to park your car under. Shade sails are cost-effective and relatively easy to install. You might need to consider beefier foundations for them only if you happen to live in a very exposed place, perhaps close to the coast. Other than that, they are just about the best fuss-free way of creating shade in your garden, just where you need it.

2. Pergolas

Pergolas are a great way of making shade in your garden as well. However, they are not as practical as shade sails because they simply take up more space. Having said that, the installation of an ornate pergola is a great addition to any home which will often add value to it. Bear in mind that a pergola's design is a more cooling option than other garden structures, such as summerhouses, because they allow air to flow through freely as well as creating shade.

3. Awnings

If you choose to attach an awning onto the side of your home, then you will obviously be able to create shade beneath its chosen location. Most awnings are able to be raised and lowered, which is an advantage if you want to create shade at only certain times of the day. That said, retractable awnings can only be put to use where your building will allow them to be fitted. In other words, you can only really make use of them for generating shade close to your home so long as the wall there is strong enough to hold one. If you have a terrace at the far end of your garden, then an awning is not really a viable option because these shade generators are not able to stand alone.
