Two Signs That Glass Balustrades Are Right for Your Home

Posted on: 10 February 2023

Are you curious about balustrades? Here are two signs that glass balustrades are the right choice for your home.

You don't want balustrades that need to be cleaned very frequently

If you'd prefer not to need to clean your new balustrades too often, then ones featuring a single handrail with large glass panels could be a suitable option. Many mistakenly assume that glass balustrades require more cleaning than ones made of other materials, due to the fact that glass is a reflective surface on which fingerprints and dust can be easily seen.

However, when walking up or down stairs, most people rarely, if ever, touch a balustrade's glass panels but instead will hold onto its handrail for support. As such, it's unlikely that handprints or the grime from people's skin will be transferred onto the glass. Furthermore, it can take quite a while for any dust to settle on flat, vertical surfaces that do not have any crevices. Unlike, for example, a typical set of wooden balusters that might have decorative carved crevices on them, in which dust could easily build up, the smooth panels of a glass balustrade could take a fairly long time to become noticeably dusty. As such, the only regular cleaning you may need to do if you get glass balustrades is wipe down their handrails, which is something you can do in just a few minutes, with a cloth as you walk up or down the stairs.

Your home is small and you want it to appear more spacious

Glass balustrades might also be a good idea if your home is small and you'd like it to appear more spacious. Whilst the panels of a glass balustrade are not invisible, their transparency means that they don't block the view of the stairway when you look at it from the other nearby areas. Being able to see both the stairway and the rest of the room at once can make this area of a home seem a bit more spacious. In contrast, if there was a wooden balustrade in a small home, its opaque balusters could block the view of the stairway and thus make this area of the home seem smaller than it is.

If you choose to get glass balustrades for this reason, it's important to avoid allowing clutter to build up on your stairs, as the see-through balustrade panels will make this clutter visible from the other nearby areas, and this clutter could counteract the sense of spaciousness that the glass balustrades add to your home.
