How to Use Empty Furniture to Get a Smaller Self-Storage Unit
Posted on: 12 November 2018
Self-storage units don't all cost the same. You pay based on the space you use. So, a large unit is more expensive than a smaller one.
If you're storing most of the contents of your house between moves or when you go travelling, then you probably need a fairly big unit. Furniture can take up a lot of space; you then have to get the rest of your stuff in the unit as well. It's easy to hire a bigger unit than you actually need because you store your furniture and your possessions separately. You can actually make your furniture work for you as additional storage to cut the space you need.
How does this work?
Empty Furniture Has Storage Potential
If you can't — or don't want to —disassemble big pieces of furniture, then they go in your unit whole. During the move to the storage site, you'll have emptied everything out of this furniture and boxed it up to be stored separately. So, if you have a couple of wardrobes, they take up a fair bit of space. All the clothes and shoes that you kept in the wardrobes take up even more space in their boxes.
However, you can reduce space needs by turning certain pieces of furniture into storage spaces. Basically, you move the furniture into the unit and then fill it with other things.
For example, you could do the following:
- Reload your clothes and shoes into your wardrobes in the unit.
- Use the drawers in tallboys, lowboys, chest of drawers and bedside cabinets as storage space for smaller items.
- Put your books back on bookcases.
- Put boxes on the top of tables and in the spaces underneath.
You don't have to put stuff back in storage the same way you'd have it in your home. You can box or bag things up to keep them clean and safe and then put the boxes or bags in the furniture. If you find a home for some boxes, then you reduce your floor space needs.
Other Things With Storage Potential
Other items you'll put in self-storage can also store things themselves. For example, you could put kitchen stuff inside your fridge. Bins can be filled with bags of small items. Self-storage companies are also a useful source of advice on making the most of unit space.
