How to choose the right business storage units
Posted on: 2 September 2019
Storage is an essential for many businesses, whether for extra stock, seldom used but still necessary equipment, document storage, or even extra office space. The decision of which facility to use is not one to take lightly. Here are some of the factors to take into account.
Location
You will probably want a storage facility in a convenient location. You will want convenient access to your equipment when you need it, so you should ideally choose a facility near your business or the branch that will need it. It is a waste of time and money to be constantly travelling to and from the site. If, on the other hand, you will only need infrequent access to the facility, you may be able to cast your net a little wider.
Access
You will need to consider whether you will need drive-up access to the units. If you are storing heavy or bulky items, this is likely to be essential. You will also need to consider whether there is 24-hour access to the site; this may not matter if you only need to visit it at particular times, but it will be important if you need access outside of office hours.
Security
If security is not important, you should consider whether it is worth keeping the items at all. Otherwise, the safety and security of your stored inventory will be vital. You should look into whether the site is staffed and has security patrols, whether there are any intruder alarms, whether the site has CCTV and any other security precautions. You should be satisfied that only you will have access to your storage containers, and that anything you leave will be safe and undamaged when you come to collect it.
Size
You should also make sure that the storage you are renting is the right size. You should consider what will happen in the future. Will you need extra space, or will the container be half-empty? There is no point paying for storage that you do not need, but equally, you do not want to find out that you did not rent enough in the first place.
Self-storage units are ideal for keeping materials and equipment off-site until they are needed again. Take the time to choose the right storage unit and facility, and you will know that your inventory is safe, secure and on hand as soon as it is required.
