You Can Convert Your Manual Awning Into an Electric One. Here's How!

Posted on: 27 November 2019

When you are on a budget, manual awnings are the best alternative because you want to minimise your costs. It makes sense to install the manual ones, save a few more coins, and later upgrade to the more luxurious electric awnings. Upgrading from a manual to an electric awning is a manageable task, thanks to the way manufacturers make the awnings. Read the following piece to understand how you can take on upgrading your manual awnings:

Purchase the Conversion Kit

You need to start by buying the conversion kit required for changing the setup of your manual awning to an electric one. The point to note here is to get a kit that matches and works for your specific type of awning. Your best bet would be to visit the vendor who sold you the manual awning. They are most likely to understand the conversion needs of your awning. If this is not possible, then you can take clear pictures of your awning and show them to an awning vendor near you, just to be sure that you are getting the right kit for the job. The conversion kit should have a harness with connecting wires, a receiver box, transmitters and other parts.

Install the Receiver

A conversion kit must come with a remote control receiver. Find a suitable location indoors where you can install the remote control receiver. Having it indoors will protect the receiver from harmful weather elements. If you must have it outdoors, then make sure that you install it inside a waterproof box. The receiver should hold firmly on to the wall using robust screws.

Work on the Wiring

The installation kit should come with a manual for the wiring connections. Examine the wiring diagram thoroughly, starting with the wires that need to link to the awning. Most wiring harnesses come with six-pin plugs connected to four-core cables. Connect the electrical cables on the four-core console to the awning, following the colour codes instructed in the manual. When you're done, follow up by connecting the six-pin plug to link the receiver box and the harness. Finish by connecting the electrical receiver to the main power supply. The package here includes a three-core cable; one end connects to the receiver box while the other two ends go to the main power supply.

During this process, make sure that your power circuit breaker is off.

Test Your Setup

Turn your circuit breaker on, followed by the power supply on the receiver. Follow the remote control instructions to see if the set up works fine. If not, then you might want to call in a professional to have a look.
