Use a Spray Bottle -- The first thing you need is a spray bottle. Most people think that the best way to waterproof an awning is by applying the waterproof material using a brush. However, using a brush does not give you the freedom to choose the volume of waterproofing material to apply. Notably, it is easy to scoop a lot of waterproofing solution with a brush, and that will cause it to run on the awning. A spray bottle, on the other hand, allows you to spray on the waterproofing liquid. This gives you control of how much to spray and helps you to avoid over-application.
Apply Several Coats -- Once you have decided that you are going to waterproof your awning, you must slate the activity when you have enough free time. The reason for this is that you need to spray at least three coats on the awning, and you should not hurry the process. For instance, the first coat you apply on the awning might need approximately ten minutes to dry, then you can apply the next coat. It is much more difficult for water to penetrate all three layers than they would on one coat, and the awning will last longer.
Run Water on Surface to Test -- Once the final coat is dry, most people run water to the surface of the awning while it is on the ground. The initial test is conducted to find out if the waterproof works. However, that is not the right way to test your waterproofed awning because you will not be using it lying flat on the ground. As such, you must put the awning up first and then follow that by running water on the surface. This is the true test of how your waterproofing will hold when it rains heavily.
