Ways to Know You Have a Flea Infestation That Requires Professional Help

Posted on: 28 January 2021

Fleas are the most common insect parasites that pets like cats and dogs carry. They can transfer from your pet to you, and their bites are very painful. They typically bite the legs, ankles, and around the feet. Even though the red dots and swelling go away on their own in most cases, sometimes the bite can cause a severe infection that will need medical attention.

It is more natural for the fleas to stay on fur animals and their beds, and they hurt them a lot by sucking their blood. They multiply extremely fast and can even make their host anaemic. The key is to be on the lookout for the following signs of a flea infestation and call flea control experts as soon as you notice them.

When You and Your Pets Scratch Excessively

When fleas bite you, they leave a chemical substance that causes an allergic reaction on your skin. As you continue to scratch the bite, it becomes more inflamed and the spot might turn reddish. Dogs and cats have the same reaction to flea bites. When they are infected, you will find them scratching vigorously, and at times even whimpering.

Pets also tend to lick the infected or bitten area in an attempt to soothe the pain. When you see your pet doing so, it's advisable to call a pest exterminator to eliminate the fleas because if you allow them to fester, the pain will only worsen.

When You See the Fleas Jumping

Fleas move around by jumping. You can observe their movement when cuddling with your dog. Since they have brownish skin, it is easy to spot them when moving through the fur. Note that these pests will have multiplied heavily by the time you notice them on the fur coat of your feline friend. However, it is easy to see them on the surfaces like carpets and bed sheets if you are keen enough.

When You Can See Flea Droppings in Your Home

The other way to tell when you have a flea infestation is the presence of their droppings. The droppings are tiny, and they resemble regular dirt. However, when you spray the droppings with clear water, they turn into a reddish shade of brown. And since you may not easily differentiate between the flea droppings and regular dirt, hire a flea control professional to inspect the droppings and help you figure out whether they came from the fleas.

Fleas multiply fast, and you can have a complicated problem within a few days. The sooner you call a professional exterminator to help you eliminate the fleas, the less your family will suffer from the infestation.
